Walking in Hawthorne

Lord V and I went to Hawthorne District, in Portland Oregon yesterday.

A must stop for us is the Pastaworks Grocery store. The Meat department is divine! We bought a l/2 lb of Salami and some nutty wheat rolls that we feasted on later in the evening when we were home. So. SO good!

I caught a glimmer of spring on our Hawthorne walk! Bring it on!

One of the fun things to see in Hawthorne is the eclectic mix of people who wander the streets. This woman zoomed past us, I had half a second to snap a picture of the fox(?) tail hanging from her backpack.

Every store you pass by is filled with a symphony of colors. It's like walking through an urban art gallery.

Walking back to our car, we strolled behind this man. He intrigued me and I confess to camera stalking him along the way...

I've worked 16 years in downtown Portland and had never tried these much talked about Portland Donuts.

I snagged a small old fashioned one with white cream cheese icing and mini M&M's. It was scrumptious!!

The Claw!

I went to lunch at Buffalo Wild Wings downtown Portland.

While waiting for my order of Asian Zing original wings (yum)...I played the claw machine.

I slipped a dollar in and tried for a blue bear. The claw slid down and up again with no success.

I tried next for a green frog laying on top. The claw slid down then back up with the frog in its hand--but wait! It also grabbed the foot of Sonic and took it along for the claw ride!

WOOT!

I held my breath as it teetered over to the collection bin...the realized the mouth of the frog had gotten snagged on the claw. Both the toys dangled over the collection bin--a frozen reward :(

A sweet waitress went and got the manager. He came over gave me a free dollar so I could try and free the toys.

A small crowd gathered as I fed the free dollar into the machine and called out encouragement as I moved the claw back and forth to try and free the frog.

Suddenly after a sharp swing of the claw, it released its plush prisoners into the collection bin.

The crowd cheered as I pulled the frog and Sonic toys from the bin and held them up victoriously!

A waitress came and handed me my to-go bag of wings and I headed out the door to the sound of the crowd singing the Rocky theme of victory.

And on the 12th day...

Last night on the way home from work, the traffic was so bad I decided to pull off the freeway and go shopping at Lloyd Center Mall until things thinned out a bit.

It was the night of the big Oregon Ducks vs Auburn game and everywhere in the mall there were little TV's showing the game.

Every kiosk was surrounded by a gaggle of Oregon Duck fans, avidly watching the game.

Golden Ticket: Rose Festival, Portland Oregon

Lunch time at work! I headed out and over to the Rose Festival on the Waterfront.

5 dollars later I had the golden ticket in hand and became one with the the throng of festival people.

Game hawkers called out as I strolled by their booths but I didn't pause. I was on a quest for a Festival feast!

I slipped past a burger place boasting of giant items, its size incomparable. Past Falafels and Elephant ears, taco's and Szechuan. Finally, tucked in the middle of the feast I spied my future lunch.

Grilled pork and beef ribs with hearty coleslaw and baked beans. Mm!

Lunch plate in hand I scurried back to work while hungry festival peoples eyes followed my retreat.

"How much for that?" A female game hawker called out.

"12 dollars."

"Oh man, I gotta get me some of that!"

At the exit a guard leered at my plate.

"Oh snap! That looks good!" He moaned with lust in his eyes.

I grinned, clutched my treasure closer to my chest and headed out the gates and back to work.

Portland is always pretty with its trees intermixed in with the city buildings.

But in Fall time, the city loses its title of "pretty" and wins the title of "beautiful".

Make a spectacular frame to the brilliant leaves that adorn them.

Say what you will about our rainy Northwest...but I wouldn't trade our Fall time scenery for a tropical one.
